CBD Topicals

Whilst medical cannabis is reserved for those with significant health conditions which haven’t responded to first-line therapies, topical CBD could be the perfect solution for someone looking to incorporate CBD into their wellness routine.

What are CBD topicals?

CBD topicals are balms, creams or gels that contain hemp oil with varying concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which can be applied directly to the skin. Not all CBD products are created equal, with some having only trace amounts of cannabidiol. You should check for cannabinoid levels which are referenced in the product label.

How do CBD topicals differ to medical cannabis?

Unlike medical cannabis, CBD products available without a prescription are not manufactured to pharmaceutical-grade quality. They have not been evaluated in human studies and therefore there are no approved medical claims which can be made about over-the-counter CBD products. It is illegal for over-the-counter CBD product to contain more than trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

What pathway is right for you?

Medical cannabis is not appropriate for everyone and for some people, a non-prescription low strength CBD balm applied directly to the skin may be a better option. Unlike CBD balms, medical cannabis requires a formal diagnosis and a GP record to be prescribed, in the chart below, we have highlighted more of the key differences in terms of considerations for medical cannabis and CBD topical balms.
